Once, Amazon was just an online bookshop. But in the future, perhaps it will be the only shop on our planet.

The US company is continuing its mission to become the website on which you can buy absolutely everything.

Its latest foray is into the UK online groceries market, and Amazon has signed up Morrisons to supply the goods.

The supermarket will supply Amazon Prime Now customers and Amazon Pantry services.

Amazon Pantry – Amazon’s online food offering – launched last year, but did not supply fresh food.

However, the new deal means Amazon customers will soon be able to buy fresh, frozen and non-perishable food items online.

The new service is expected to become available later in 2016.

The announcement will cause alarm bells to ring for the UK’s largest supermarkets, and also presents a challenge to Ocado, the delivery company, which runs Morrisons online food delivery service.

The news of the tie-up with Amazon saw Ocado’s shares fall 8% in early trading today.

Meanwhile, Morrisons shares rose by 4.4%.

Morrisons chief executive David Potts said: “This is a low risk and capital light wholesale supply arrangement that demonstrates the opportunity we have to become a broader business. We look forward to working with Amazon to develop and grow this partnership over the coming months.”
