Why will the lights go off at all major London attractions on Saturday night?

Blackout for the capital’s landmarks

An environmental campaign will see the lights of most London landmarks completely switched off on Saturday night.

Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the Gherkin, Piccadilly Circus, Harrods and the Ritz all plan to take part in Earth Hour 2016 by switching off lights at 8.30pm for 60 minutes.

Members of the public too are encouraged to take part, with the aim of reducing energy consumption and raising awareness for the planet’s resources.

Jennifer Clements, spokesperson for WWF-UK, said: “By taking one simple step to switch off, Earth Hour is a chance for all of us to come together and send out a global message about protecting our planet.”
