Top Gear’s Chris Evans apologises “unreservedly” for London Cenotaph stunt

Outrageous show in outrageous behaviour scandal

Top Gear thrives on mild controversy, and the show’s producers have apparently struck brouhaha gold once again.

It’s the sort of behaviour that crinkles a few octogenarian brows in various pockets of the country, generating enough of a fuss to prompt miles of column inches vaguely denouncing the incident, but the offense is not so grave that the public at large are bothered.

The latest commotion concerns the driving of cars around London’s Cenotaph on Whitehall.

Apparently Top Gear’s new celebrity presenter Matt Le Blanc, better known as Joey from Friends, was filmed performing donuts near the war memorial.

How you doin?

Retired military commander Colonel Richard Kemp was outraged. He said to the Telegraph: “This is a sacred tribute to millions of people who have done far more for their country than Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc ever will.”

Colonel Kemp is undoubtedly right. When these young clowns and their motorcars be banished from our shores?

But Colonel Kemp went on to add: “Jeremy Clarkson was certainly no saint but I don’t believe he would have ever performed a stunt in such bad taste.”

Erm? Perhaps he was not a regular viewer of the old Top Gear series or the UK press.

Clarkson substitute Chris Evans addressed the incident. He said: “On behalf of the Top Gear team and Matt, I would like to apologise unreservedly for what these images seem to portray.

“There have been some very incendiary comments written alongside these pictures and I completely understand this furore but the Top Gear team would never ever do that.”

“Retrospectively it was unwise to be anywhere near the Cenotaph with this motorcar.”

Separately, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne also condemned the noise the Top Gear team was making on Whitehall.

In a tweet, Osborne said: “Trying to write my Budget, despite noisy episode of @BBC-TopGear being filmed outside on Horseguards Parade. Keep it down please @achrisevans.”
