Amazing Victorian Crystal Palace subway could reopen

A beautiful Victorian subway in Crystal Palace could reopen this year thanks to a successful campaign.

A crowdfunding page set up for the site has attracted nearly £5,000 of investment which will be put together with £19,000 from Heritage of London, Southwark Council and local heritage and community groups, to help refurbish and reopen the site.

In December, the subway will be 150 years old, and campaigners are hoping that the work will be done by then.

Their GoFundMe page reads: “We would love to open the subway more frequently for heritage and community activities and we are very very close to doing it.

“We have planning permission to reinstate safe pedestrian access on the Southwark side of the subway and we have all the relevant experts and paperwork in place.

“But we are just over £10,000 short of our target figure and we are looking to raise this as a matter of urgency in order for us to re-open in this anniversary year.”
