Women gaining more places more quickly at UK universities

57,000 more women than men admitted to university this year

The number of women gaining places at British universities has risen twice as quickly as the number of places going to men.

This year, 57,000 more women than men have gained university places, according to the latest figures from university entry service UCAS.

There has been 463,000 places awarded to A-level students this year, a rise of 3%.

Within this, the number of places going to women has risen by 4%, while for men the rise was 2%.

The record number of places means that of all the UK’s 18-year-olds, 25% of men and 34% of women will be off to university this autumn.
