Here's what the UK's tallest residential building is going to look like

Where is the UK’s tallest residential building? In London, of course.

The 68-storey South Quay Plaza in the London Docklands just got approval.

Tower Hamlets council approved the building last year. However, London Mayor Boris Johnson expressed concerns over safety. This week, the mayor told Tower Hamlets Council that he would not re-examine the scheme.

Developers of the tower Berkeley Homes first proposed to build 73 storeys. However, safety fears prompted the number of storeys to be reduced.

Designed by legendary architects Foster + Partners, the scheme includes plans of a 68-storey tower and a smaller 36-storey tower.

This will create 888 new homes and 188 affordable properties. The tower will also have a public piazza and a “vibrant waterfront” in the vicinity.

Construction is set to begin in July 2016 and the building is expected to be completed in five years.
