Gone with the Wind: Strong gusts from Walkie Talkie's base spark investigation

It was nicknamed the “Walkie Scorchie” after it melted side mirrors of a Jaguar in 2013. And now, the Walkie Talkie is gaining notoriety for having a wind problem.

The London skyscraper has received complaints of strong gust of winds coming from its base.

Earlier this year, a sales assistant working in the vicinity told City A.M., “I almost got blown over the other day walking up past the building. “When I got around the corner it was fine. I was scared to go back.”

Now City of London Corporation has called for an investigation into the skyscraper’s “wind studies”.

The Corporation’s head of design Gwyn Richards said: “The wind outcome at street level experienced post-construction on a number of projects differs somewhat to the conditions we were expecting from the one outlined in the planning application wind assessments.

“This is why we are asking for an independent verification of the wind studies on a number of new schemes to ensure a rigorous and resilient approach as possible.”
