Simms' City: Pippa Middleton does some early Christmas shopping
Social butterfly Freya Simms gives us the lowdown on London’s happening spots this week
Time for a crackling fire at The Angelsea
The nights are drawing in and there is a distinctive nip in the air so what better to do on a cold, crisp November night in West London than head to the Angelsea Arms. Not only does it have a delicious, fresh and seasonal menu, a cracking wine list, but best of all, a cosy leather sofa, perfectly distressed and positioned beside a roaring fire.
The tarnished knight and I glugged back the pinot noir over pheasant and I became star struck by writer Sebastian Faulks at the next table.
Philip Mould in miniature
With the weekend over, this week has been eventastic for the Muse team. Tuesday night saw the preview of the Tansey Collection of portrait miniatures from the time of Marie Antoinette. This private collection usually resides in a German Schloss. It is a real treat that resident specialist Emma Rutherford secured the collection so that we are able to view the dainty images of the tulle clad aristocrats before the guillotine made its chilling impact on France.
There are some wonderful miniatures of ladies replete with ostrich feathers and a young Casanova flaunting his chest hair for all to enjoy. Below is a picture of my colleague Sophie cupping a portrait of 18th century courtesan Kitty?
Floris Neüssus photograms at ATLAS
Following the hugely successful exhibition “Shadow Catchers” at the Victoria and Albert Museum in Autumn 2010, the ATLAS Gallery opened Floris Neusüss: Ancient and Modern on 6th November.
Neusüss is a German photogram artist and this show has some of his landmark early works as well as some more recent pieces. The most spectacular pieces are the full scale and newly released photogramic nudes, as well as the hugely influential Tellerbilder or “Plate” series from the 1970’s which, in more recent years, inspired younger photogram artists such as Adam Fuss and Gary Fabian Miller.
The show is on until 20 January and I highly recommend it.
Christmas comes early to Burlington Arcade
Next for the Muse team was the Burlington Bazaar – a luxury shopping event in aid of the children’s charity, Orminston and hosted by Lady Tollemache. Shoppers and their hounds took to the bite size bangers to keep the wolf from the door as well as the wide range of lovely gifts on display. Atendees included Pippa Middleton and her sister the Duchess of Cambridge together with the lovely spaniel Lupo, Princess Beatrice and many more of the great and the good.
It was definitely the place to sniff out stocking fillers as well as royals and their entourage.
Steak haché and pommes frites at Zédel
Today I met up with my old boss and mentor, Diana Cawdell. Diana is one of the doyennes of the art and PR scene and great fun so it was lovely to have a proper catch-up, trade stories and reflect on all the comings and goings of the market. There was much chat about ‘the big fairs’ - Frieze Masters, Masterpiece and TEFAF as well the boudin blanc! Zédel is a great addition to the Wolesley stable, reasonably priced, comfortable and a good place for a pre-theatre dinner.
