Pictures: Famous books become London benches

If you like sitting and reading, boy do we have the story for you.

From today, Londoners will be able to sit inside giant books which are dotted around London in literary locations, to celebrate reading for fun.

A total of 50 book benches, which have been installed by the National Literary Trust and Wild in Art, have been decorated by local artists and famous names, including Ralph Steadman who illustrated Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, and The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler.

Famous characters you can spot around central London include Agatha Christie’s Poirot, James Bond, Dr Seuss, Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes.

This comes as the National Literary Trust has also found young people’s enjoyment of reading is at its highest level in eight years, in a study of 30,000 youngsters aged 8-16.
