Hip hop pays top dollar to its stars – but who is the richest of them all?

Sean “Diddy”/“Puff Daddy”/“P Diddy” Combs has long been top-dog in the hip hop earnings stakes, with a $60m empire made up from drinks, clothing and TV deals.

But Combs has now been dethroned by veteran hip hop artist Dr. Dre who has soared to the top spot with pre-tax earnings of $620m following the $3bn sale of his headphone brand Beats, which was snapped up by Apple.

Forbes said that Dre’s earnings make him the highest earning musician of any genre that they have ever evaluated.

In addition to the sale of Beats, Dre’s earnings were made up of ventures including a Cognac brand and a Vodka Brand.

Combs tied for second place with rapper Jay Z.
