Doctor Who: 37 amazing things the Doctor has said

We <3 the Doctor

The new series of Doctor Who starts tomorrow (7.50pm BBC One). With most of the UK getting (quite rightly) pretty excited about it, we looked at some of the Doctor’s best quotes from across time.

The First Doctor (William Hartnell)

“You wanted advice you said. I never give it. Never. But I might just say this to you. Always search for truth. My truth is in the stars and yours is here.”

“Well, my boy, we finally rid this planet of Daleks!”

The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton)

“There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things. Things which act against everything we believe in. They must be fought.”

The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee)

“Courage isn’t just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It’s being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway.”

The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker)

“Would you like a jelly baby?”

“Homo sapiens. What an inventive, invincible species. It’s only a few million years since they crawled up out of the mud and learned to walk. Puny, defenceless bipeds. They’ve survived flood, famine and plague. They’ve survived cosmic wars and holocausts. And now, here they are, out among the stars, waiting to begin a new life. Ready to outsit eternity. They’re indomitable. Indomitable.”

“Oil? An emergency? Ha! It’s about time the people who run this planet of yours realised that to be dependent on a mineral slime just doesn’t make sense.”

“The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don’t alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.”

The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison)

“I’m definitely not the man I used to be. Thank Goodness.”

“I sometimes wonder why I like the people of this miserable planet so much.”

The Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker)

“A little gratitude wouldn’t irretrievably damage my ego.”

“Small though it is, the human brain can be quite effective when working at full efficiency, not unlike myself!”

The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy)

“You can always judge a man by the quality of his enemies.”

“Anybody remotely interesting is mad in some way or another.”

“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea’s asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea’s getting cold. Come on, Ace. We’ve got work to do.”

The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann)

“In the fight for survival, there are no rules.”

The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston)

“Do you wanna come with me? ‘Cause if you do, then I should warn you — you’re gonna see all sorts of things. Ghosts from the past. Aliens from the future. The day the Earth died in a ball of flame. It won’t be quiet, it won’t be safe, and it won’t be calm. But I’ll tell you what it will be: the trip of a lifetime!”

“Your wish is my command. But be careful what you wish for.”

“Excuse me, do you mind not farting while I’m saving the world?”

The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)

“Aw, I wanted to be ginger! I’ve never been ginger!”

“Think you’ve seen it all? Think again. Outside those doors, we might see anything. We could find new worlds, terrifying monsters, impossible things. And if you come with me… nothing will ever be the same again!”

“You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can’t spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That’s the curse of the Time Lords.”

“Crossing into established events is strictly forbidden. Except for cheap tricks.”

“It’s not that I’m an innocent. I’ve taken lives. I got worse, I got clever. Manipulated people into taking their own. Sometimes, I think a Time Lord lives too long…”

The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith)

“The Doctor will see you now.”

“Hello. I’m the Doctor. Basically…run.”

“Amy Pond, there’s something you better understand about me ‘cause it’s important and one day your life may depend on it: I am definitely a mad man with a box.”

“There are fixed points throughout time where things must stay exactly the way they are. This is not one of them. This is an opportunity! Whatever happens here will create its own timeline, its own reality, a temporal tipping point. The future revolves around you, here, now, so do good!”

“The universe is big, it’s vast and complicated, and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles. And that’s the theory. Nine hundred years, never seen one yet, but this would do me.”

“Safe? No! Of course you’re not safe! There’s about a billion other things out there just waiting to burn your whole world, but if you want to pretend you’re safe just so you can sleep at night, then, OK, you’re safe. But you’re not really.”

“I am and always will be the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams.”

“Rory, take Hitler and put him in the cupboard over there, now. Do it.”

“OK, this is bad. At the moment I don’t know how bad, but certainly we’re three buses, a long walk, and eight quid in a taxi from good.”

“I’m the Doctor. I’m an alien from outer space. I’m a thousand years old, I’ve got two hearts, and I can’t fly a plane! Can you?”

“Don’t get into a spaceship with a mad man. Didn’t anyone teach you that?”

The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi)

“Kidneys! I’ve got new kidneys! I don’t like the colour.”

“I’m the Doctor. I’ve lived for over 2000 years. I’ve made many mistakes. And it’s about time I did something about that.”
