“Cyber Monday” shoppers set to spend £500m today

If you have begun the week feeling hollow as the Christmas shopping ecstasies of “Black Friday” have receded over the weekend, then here is some news to perk you up.

Following the success of the American style Black Friday promotions, a further £450m is set to be spent today. Dubbed Cyber Monday, or Mega Monday, consumers are expected to spend almost half a billion pounds, or roughly £312,500 every minute, with more than seven million online transactions taking place.

According to the Guardian, today is likely to be the busiest internet shopping day ever recorded in the UK, as spending is boosted by the final pay-cheque before the festive season.

Jeremy Nichols, Visa Europe’s director of commercial development, said: “UK consumers’ love affair with online shopping will reach its peak on Mega Monday, when we predict that we will process 7.7m transactions – a 16% rise on last year.”

On Friday, chaos ensued at ASDA stores, where desperate shoppers queued for hours to get Black Friday bargains. A scramble for goods saw fights break out in several stores. Fighting began in one store after a man reportedly tried to buy two 60 inch televisions. In Merseyside, a woman was taken to hospital, and in Bristol a man was arrested after a fracas broke out.

An ASDA spokesman said: “Black Friday exceeded our expectations and was hugely successful. We sold over 11,000 tablets and 12,000 TVs in the first hour.”
