These are the 10 most popular types of wine in the UK

We aren’t exactly known for our oenophilia here in Blightly.

More than once I have seen French friends shudder as they observe us lesser-palated persons picking up a bottle from the offie, as Brits’ selection of wine is often based on a rather simple three-pronged criteria: 1) Right price / special offer on price; 2) Heard of that grape before; 3) The label’s quite jazzy.

So it’s perhaps not that surprising that our favourite grape, sauvingnon blanc - according to new research from Laithwaites based on its 400,000-strong customer database - is one often completely panned by those who actually work in wine and/or who know what they’re talking about when it comes to viticulture.

Nothing in our favourite top 10 grape varities is all that imaginative, if we’re honest.

Ah well - let’s just get drunk and forget about it. That’s the British way.

Here are the top 10 most popular grape varieties in the UK (excluding blends):

1. Sauvignon Blanc

2. Chardonnay

3. Merlot

4. Cabernet Sauvignon

5. Shiraz

6. Grenache

7. Pinot Noir

8. Tempranillo

9. Pinot Grigio

10. Malbec
