Speeding fines could increase to a maximum of £10,000

Speeding fines could reach £10,000 under new proposals to increase the maximum fines magistrates can dish out.

Currently top level offences that magistrates courts deal with, such as speeding, have a maximum fine of £2,500. But justice minister Jeremy Wright thinks maximum fines need to be increased.

“Magistrates are the cornerstone of our justice system and these changes will provide them with greater powers to deal with the day-to-day offences that impact their local communities,” he said.

The proposals will need to be debated in parliament before they become law though.

So what could the new maximum fines be?

  • Cycle racing on the street would increase from £200 to £800
  • Riding a motorbike without a helmet would increase from £500 to £2,000
  • Being drunk and disorderly would increase from £1,000 to £4,000

  • £10k is ridiculous. If I got a £10k fine I would have to go bankrupt!!!
