Charlie Bigham’s £314 ready meal

Who ate all the pies? Probably Britain. We are notoriously fond of anything encased in pastry. But are we ready for a luxury pie that costs in excess of £300?

Charlie Bigham, creator of Waitrose range of ready meals, clearly thinks the time is right for his latest re-heatable dinner, and has set about engineering a lavish fish dish, that includes salmon poached in champagne, oysters, lobsters, truffles and caviar.

At £314.16 the Swish Pie isn’t aimed at the standard ready-meal consumer. In fact, the price was inspired by the infinite mathematical constant ‘pi’ – clever eh?

Bigham said: “We wanted to take our reputation for making the finest ready meals that bit further and create something truly extraordinary for our customers to enjoy.

“I’ve spent months scouring the globe for the most exclusive ingredients while developing this unique recipe to ensure it really is the most exceptional ready meal out there.

“I’ve always been obsessed with quality ingredients, provenance and unique and delicious flavours. I’ve brought that to my range of 26 dishes over the last 17 years and we’ve had wonderful success.

“With the Swish Pie we went all out using the most exclusive ingredients to create a unique dish that really is the best ready meal ever made.”

But LondonlovesBusiness has noticed a distinct similarity between Bigham’s latest pie, and the culinary work of Channel 4’s louche bookseller turned restaurateur Bernard Black.

In series two of Black Books, Bernard creates a “luxury pie”, containing: Lobsters, caviar, truffles, saffron and champagne. Has Bigham been watching perhaps?
