Tesla boss: “Obvious” Apple is making rival electric car

Tesla’s Elon Musk says Apple’s entry to electric car world would expand the industry

Tesla boss Elon Musk has said Apple is working to create an electric vehicle to rival those of his own company.

Speaking to the BBC, Musk said it was an “open secret”, and added: “It’s pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it”.

He also said he expects that human-controlled cars will soon become a “strange anachronism”.

According to the BBC, Apple has not formally announced an electric car building programme, but it has bought the domain names apple.auto and apple.car.

Despite the tech titan looking set to wade into the electric car world, Musk said he does not see Apple as a threat, saying it would “expand the industry”.

Tesla already has stiff competition on its hands from the likes of BMW and Nissan, and currently runs at a loss, focusing on the luxury end of the market rather than selling higher numbers of cheaper cars.
