Tesco to launch low-priced tablet on 23 September

From the horsemeat scandal to a drop in profits, Tesco hasn’t had a particluarly good year.

So in a bid to redeem iteself, the UK’s biggest retailer is planning to launch a low-priced tablet on 23 September.

Analysts predict that Tesco’s tablet will have a seven-inch screen and a £99 pricetag.

Tesco has sent out invitation with the phrase “We’ve got something to show you” – which is quite similar to last year’s Apple’s iPhone 5 launch invitation which read “We’ve got a little more to show you”.

Ben Wood, mobile analyst with research firm CCS Insight, told the Guardian: “Obviously it’ll be [running Google’s mobile operating system] Android, probably [a storage capacity of] 16GB and attempting to hit the £99 price point — in my mind that will have to be the price.”

Tesco’s tablet will compete with the 8GB Amazon Kindle Fire that costs £99, Google’s 16GB Nexus 7 that costs £199 and the 16GB version of Apple’s iPad mini which is on the market for £269.
