Number of tech firms in London doubles in three years

The number of tech firms in London has increased by 100% between 2009 and 2012, according to a report by Tech City UK.

Research shows that sector’s 500,000 plus jobs have contributed to 30% of growth in London’s jobs market.

A Tech City UK spokesman said: “Three years since the Prime Minister launched what began as a local initiative.

“Tech City has now become the nucleus of a new era of tech and digital growth which has seen clusters emerge and thrive all across London.”

Labour MP Meg Hilier has called for more action from the government to boost the sector.

“The government has been a bit star struck by the tech sector,” she told the Standard.

“They are amazing, but ministers also need to ask how much they are doing for the local supply chain and for employment in their area.

“Many of these firms freely admit they don’t employ local people at the moment, so the government needs to help them recruit in their area.”
