Nokia smartphones to make a comeback in 2017

Would you buy a Nokia phone again?

The Nokia brand is set to launch a new smartphone in early 2017.

Do you remember the Nokia 3310? The firm is banking on that sort of nostalgia to help it sell phones.

A company set up by former Nokia employees called HMD Global has licensed the Nokia brand name from Microsoft after selling out to the tech giant in 2013. For the revival, Nokia has struck partnerships with device manufacturer Foxconn.

The head of HMD Global, Arto Nummela, told the Guardian: “Consumers may be carrying different smartphones now, but are they really in love and loyal to those brands?”

He added: “We want to be one of the key competitive players in the smartphone business.”

HMD took over the Nokia feature phone business from Microsoft on Thursday last week following the sale of the business in May. It has a new licencing deal with Nokia giving it sole use of the brand on mobile phones and tablets for the next decade.

Nokia will have to fight for its spot on the market with other contenders such as Huawei, it currently holds the number three position.
