Google to begin building self-driving cars

Google is to begin manufacturing self-driving cars, the company’s founder Sergey Brin has said at a conference in California.

The car will lack all controls other than a stop and start button. The company has also released pictures of the new car design, which features a sort of smiley face on the front, apparently designed to make is seem less threatening and help people accept driverless vehicles.

The new car will be a two seater vehicle with a top speed of 25mph the BBC reports.

The car also features foam material in place of a front bumper, and a more flexible windscreen to help reduce injuries in the event of an accident.

The company says that their autonomous cars have already covered in excess of 700,000 miles of public roads. The vehicles have laser sensors and radar to help navigate the unpredictable nature of transport infrastructure.

Chris Urmson, director of the company’s self-driving project said: “We’re really excited about this vehicle - it’s something that will allow us to really push the capabilities of self-driving technology, and understand the limitations.”

“We’ll see these vehicles on the road within the year,” he added.
