Facebook accidentally launched Snapchat rival Slingshot yesterday

Mark Zuckerberg was left embarrassed yesterday after Facebook accidentally launched messaging service Slingshot, its answer to Snapchat.

The social networking giant added the messaging service to App Store on Monday.

“Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we’re working on,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

“With Slingshot, you’ll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. It’ll be ready soon and we’re excited for you to try it out.”

The messaging service was available briefly in countries including Russia, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Users could take photos, record videos, draw and write on images and subsequently delete them after sending.

The app was pulled from the app store within a few hours.

Facebook has given no clear indication of Slingshot’s official launch date.
