4 things you need to know about Eileen Burbidge, the new chair of Tech City UK

The venture capitalist takes over from Baroness Joanna Shields

She might be one of the most well-known venture capitalists in the UK tech scene, but unless you’re familiar with the industry, you’d be forgiven for not knowing who Eileen Burbidge is.

Here are four things you need to know:

She’s worked for a lot of big tech companies

Burbidge has worked across the US and Europe for Verizon, Skype, Apple, Yahoo and Sun Microsystems.

She didn’t mean to become a venture capitalist

“I became an ‘accidental’ VC in that I started working with the former Skype engineers who founded Ambient Sound Investments,” she said in a Fortune interview. She invested with her co-founders Robert Dighero and Stefan Glaenzer and formed the company Passion Capital.

She’s American but with British citizenship

Burbidge spent 10 years in Silicon Valley but moved in 2004 and now London is her home. “Now that I do have citizenship, four kids that are British and going to go through school from here … I genuinely now am invested personally and of course professionally in the country,” she said in an interview with The Guardian. “It’s like footballers, you want to play in the top league.”

She’s a government adviser

After the general election, she was appointed by Cameron’s government as an adviser on fintech and she has been awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to the tech industry.
