Which supermarket just overtook Waitrose to become Britain’s sixth largest?

Here are the supermarket size rankings

Aldi has just overtaken Waitrose to become the sixth biggest supermarket in the UK, with 5.3% of the market.

Here are the rankings from market researcher Kantar Worldpanel:

Supermarket market share

While Waitrose dropped behind Lidl, it is still the only other retailer to grow sales ahead of the market and increase market share.

Aldi’s double-digit growth

It’s all down to Aldi’s double-digit sales growth, according to Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar Worldpanel.

He said: “Growth has been fuelled by over half a million new shoppers choosing to visit Aldi this year and average basket sizes increasing by 7%.

“The German discounter’s sales have increased by 16.8% in the latest period, still high compared to other retailers but slower relative to its recent performance.”
