Which is Britain's worst-performing supermarket chain? (hint: it's not Tesco)

Tesco’s been getting a lot of flak for its performance lately. But turns out, it’s not the worst-performing grocer of the “big four” supermarkets.

Asda has just reported a 3.9% fall in sales in the 15 weeks to 19 April – this is its worst quarterly performance since 2006.

Over similar periods, Morrisons saw a 2.9% drop while Sainsbury’s saw a 1.9% fall. Tesco reported a drop of 1% in slaes in the three months to 28 February.

Andy Clarke, chief executive, Asda, said: “I can’t remember a time when our industry has seen such a dramatic change in market structure.

“It’s clear the big grocers are losing market share and the discounters are continuing to grow.”

Clarke added: “Whilst I take no pride in reporting a negative number, we are in a period of expected turbulence, not distress.

“Fundamentally, Asda remains a balanced, healthy sustainable business.”

  • It's not just discounters affecting their performance but a total disregard for customer service. A call centre based in South Africa, who, when they contact the local store have no intention of responding. Mr. Clarke should look at staffing, particularly "management". Shopping online is a nightmare. Haven't used them for over a month.

  • Never would have thought that Shruti, You are right when you asked the question in the headline - the first name that came up was Tesco, Well they are getting lots and lots of publicity over this and I guess they wouldn't have been able to do this much in such a short space of time with any advert campaigns - But back to the subject Adsa? I'd never have thought that.

We have now stopped buying groceries at Asda after a truly awful experience with their so-called 'customer service' department.

  • You get what you pay for, if you want good service, go local.
