What is Black Friday? Where can I find the best deals?

Black Friday is coming. Here’s what you need to know

Do you love shopping? Do you love buying cheap products? Do you like large crowds of people in shops?

If so, Black Friday is for you.

It is an orgiastic retail frenzy the like of which Britain has never seen before. Last year’s Black Friday was the first time Boxing Day was not the biggest spending day in the country.

This year it’s going to be even more demented. Internet sales of goods are expected to top £1bn in the 24-hour period for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, stores are expecting a human tidal wave to break upon them tomorrow. Last year London Loves Business reported that people “went bananas”, and the police, riot vans and ambulances arrived at all major supermarkets around the UK

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday is on Friday! That’s tomorrow, Friday 27 November.

Why Black?

Hilariously, shops recently tried to rename Black Friday, “Big Friday”, because Black Friday sounds rather apocalyptic. They failed.

The moniker originated in the United States. In Philadelphia in the sixties, on the day after Thanksgiving, people began the habit of swarming shops looking for Christmas presents going cheap in the sales.

Why Friday?

This is because it comes on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day – that’s always the fourth Thursday in November. This is an American thing to do with Christianity, Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. We don’t have Thanksgiving in Britain.
