Trouble for Tesco as sales slide 3.8%

Tesco has revealed a third successive quarter of significant sales falls across the UK, with chief executive Philip Clarke under increasing pressure to turn the UK’s biggest retailer around.

The supermarket’s like-for-like sales in the UK tumbled by 3.8% in the last quarter.

The string of poor results are the worst in Clarke’s 40-year career with Tesco, and the embattled boss said he is expecting worse in coming quarters.

Clarke said: “I haven’t seen a quarter sales performance like this before but I’ve never seen a period of change like this across the industry.”

Tesco has blamed a tough trading environment and the price slashing tactics of rival supermarkets, which have made significant inroads into market share.
