We might not grow much of the stuff in the UK, but a cup of tea is seen as being quintessentially British. So it might come as a surprise to find tea sales are dropping – and pretty quickly at that.

Coffee could be to blame for the fall in tea sales, as there has been a lot of innovation in that sector, according to Mintel, who carried out the research.

Emma Clifford, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel, said: “New formats and the coffee shop culture have encouraged switching from tea to coffee – but the rate of this switching is likely to abate, with a large base of core users unlikely to change their tea drinking habits.”

  • I think that everyone should wean themselves off of sugar and milk added to tea and finealy find that that tea is the perfect drink.
