Customers of which supermarket bought more champagne than semi-skimmed milk over Christmas?

You’re in for a Lidl surprise

The best-selling item at Lidl this Christmas was £11.99 Comte De Senneval champagne, knocking semi-skimmed milk off the top spot.

You might not peg Lidl as a luxury food supplier, but it seems savvy shoppers snapped up bargain products as fast as the discounter snapped up market share.

Its most recent results showed that it had boosted sales by 20% year-on-year.

In November, the German retailer had 3.5% share of the grocery market.

That proportion is expected to have risen over Christmas.
