Battle of the breakfasts: Wetherspoons slashes morning prices to compete with coffee chains

Wetherspoons might seem an odd place to go for breakfast for many.

Some will imagine casting a lonely figure, eating a colossal full-English next to a man who is drinking a pint at 8.45am and appears in no rush to get to work.

But it seems you’d be wrong.

The pub chain already sells more breakfasts than Caffe Nero or Pret a Manger and it’s not stopping there.

It’s set to slash prices from next week in a bid to triple its coffee and breakfast sales in the next 18 months.

Wetherspoons will be selling filter coffee at 99p (down 25p) with free refills. Small lattes and cappuccinos are £1.09 between 8am and 2pm.

It’s also introducing a new £2.99 breakfast.

The company’s pre-tax profits rose 4.1% in the first half of its financial year, coming in at £37.5m.

Tim Martin, who founded JD Wetherspoon in 1979, said profits were under pressure from staff wages (about 80% of whom are on zero-hours contracts) and pressure from supermarkets.

Martin is a high-profile campaigner against the higher taxes paid by pubs than their supermarket rivals.

He said: “As previously highlighted, the biggest danger to the pub industry is the continuing tax disparity between supermarkets and pubs… There is a growing realisation among politicians, the media and the public that pubs are overtaxed and that a level tax playing field will create more jobs and taxes for the country.”
