UKIP gains first ever MP

Douglas Carswell defected from the Conservative Party in August. Now he’s become UKIP’s first MP following a by-election in Clacton, Essex.

Carswell won after gathering 12,404 votes, with Conservative candidate Giles Watling second at 8,709 votes.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage tweeted last night after the vote came in.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Conservative Party Chairman Grant Shapps described the by-election as a “wake-up call”.

We took a look at his voting record since he was elected in 2005 as a Tory MP.
