Tristram Hunt will not contest Labour leadership

The Labour MP instead backs Liz Kendall

Labour MP Tristram Hunt has confirmed he will not contest the Labour leadership.

He has thrown his support behind Liz Kendall, who he says has “the right ideas” and the “right leadership mettle”.

During a speech at think tank Demos today, Hunt said he had phoned lots of MPs and found that “the bulk of MPs are already committed to just a couple of candidates”.

Candidates require backing from at least 34 MPs to gain a nomination.

Hunt also expressed his surprise that the leadership race had already been decided within just five days of Labour’s “devastating defeat”.
