Tony Blair is “a narcissist with a messiah complex”, says best-selling author and old pal Robert Harris

The best-selling author Robert Harris, whose books include The Ghost, Imperium, and Fatherland, has hit out at his former friend Tony Blair, who he says is a “narcissist,” has a “messiah complex”, and who is now “passionately interested in making money”.

In a revealing interview in Total Politics Harris has harsh words for Blair, who he accuses of turning his back on Britain to pursue “this strange life with the billionaire super-rich on private jets and yachts.”

“It’s impossible to see the man he is now in the man that I knew,” Harris says. “Who knew that he would become a great friend of George Bush and would want to keep bombing people and would become so passionately interested in making money?”

Harris says he first met Blair in 1992, and he seemed “friendly and approachable”.

But, he adds that “it is impossible to see the man he is now in the man that I knew.”

“I think there were in Tony things we perhaps didn’t realise at the time – of narcissism, a messiah complex, that had merely accelerated this impulse in him.”

  • After the New Labour Gov left us with over a trillion pound in debt, perhaps Tony should advise the Gov how to pay the interest on the now 1,5 trillion debt. It is not easy to refuse the US help if they ask in military issues. What will be the case if we have to ask the US ? Saddam at the time had wound the west up with invasions and inspection farce. The twin towers, sparked off a response, Bush gave Iraq liberty, but others would not let them have it.
