Sadiq Khan to run for Mayor of London

Sadiq Khan, the Labour MP for Tooting, has formally declared his intention to run for Mayor of London.

The popular MP, who grew his majority in his constituency at the election stood down as shadow justice secretary earlier this week.

He is the fifth candidate to formally declare their intention to run for Labour.

He will take on current favourite Tessa Jowell in the bid to win his party’s nomination.

With Labour upping the number of seats it holds in London by seven at the election, the mayoralty is widely seen as the party’s to lose. No strong Tory candidates have yet emerged.

Khan joins Jowell, and other Labour hopefuls David Lammy, Diane Abbot and Christian Wolmar in the race to City Hall.
