Register to vote by midnight tonight! 7.5 million eligible voters remain unregistered

Don’t miss out. Registration deadline is midnight on 20 April

As many as 7.5 million people eligible to vote may be unable to exercise their democratic rights at the general election if they fail to register to vote by midnight tonight.

A significant change in voting registration methods is an additional problem this year, with over 800,000 people affected by a move from household registration to individual registration.

The change has disproportionately affected young people and students who would previously have been registered at parents’ houses or at universities through household registration.

Labour has described the situation as a “scandal”.

Electoral Commission chairperson Jenny Watson said: “This is your last chance to register to vote if you want to make your voice heard on 7 May. It takes just a few minutes to apply to register online, so do it now.

“We don’t want anyone to miss out, but if you miss the deadline on 20 April and then try to vote you will be turned away from the polling station on election day. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you.”
