“Plebgate” MP Andrew Mitchell invested in tax avoidance scheme

Former chief whip Andrew Mitchell invested in a tax avoidance scheme, BBC Newsnight has revealed.

The high-profile scheme, which organisers said gave investors the opportunity to invest in the British film industry, was criticised by HMRC for being designed to generate inappropriate amounts of tax relief for investors.

Ingenious Film Partners 2, as the scheme was known, is one of 1,200 candidates for “accelerated payment notices”, a new HMRC power which allows it to claim tax it may be owed before the matter is settled in court.

Mitchell is best known for resigning from the government after arguing with a Downing Street policeman in the “Plebgate” row.

The MP and the scheme’s other investors should expect a big tax bill in the coming months, HMRC said.
