MPs confident of sustainable growth ahead of 2015 election

A survey of 150 MPs has revealed an upbeat outlook for the economy in the 12 months ahead of the next general election. Data collected by polling and research firm ComRes shows that 75% of MPs expect economic growth to continue into 2015, and 66% think that unemployment will fall in the next 12 months.

But as might be expected, coalition politicians are most positive, while their Labour counterparts have tempered enthusiasm for the recovery.

Of the Conservative MPs polled, 90% said they expected economic growth to continue to improve, and their coalition partners were only slightly less confident with 75% of Lib Dems expecting improvement. Meanwhile, just 50% of Labour MPs said they thought that economic growth was set to improve.

On inflation however, 57% of all MPs polled expect the picture to remain the same, though more Tories and Lib Dems said they thought it would fall.

Labour MPs were also most pessimistic about unemployment, with only 35% saying they thought things would improve over the next 12 months. This compares to 87% of Tory MPs and 84% of Lib Dems who expect to see employment figures improve.
