Wearing a prostitute’s orange bra, leather biker jacket and smoking a cigarette, John Sewel, the deputy speaker of the House of Lords reclines in a chair in his tax-payer subsidised Dolphin Square flat.

He looks the picture of decadent contentment.

The photo, snapped by one of two £200-a-night sex workers with whom Sewel enjoyed several cocaine fuelled evenings, was released by The Sun on Sunday, and has already seen Sewel resign his position as deputy speaker.

He is however, currently hanging on to his position as a Lord. This situation could soon change though, as the Speaker of the Lords Lady D’Souza, described Sewel’s alleged behaviour as “shocking and unacceptable” and said she would take the matter to Scotland Yard.

In a video, published by the Sun, which was reportedly filmed in Sewel’s flat, he is heard describing the Prime Minister David Cameron as “the most facile, superficial prime minister there’s ever been”.

“He just shoots from the hip. He is false. He makes one-off commitments and cannot deliver,” Sewel says.

He also calls Mayor of London Boris Johnson “a joke” and a “public school upper class twit”, adding: “He plays well in London because they like a cheeky chappie.

“Can you present Boris Johnson in Preston, in Burnley, in Manchester? No, they just think he’s an a*sehole.”

It wasn’t just the Tories for whom he reserved his ire for either. He said Blair’s decision to go to war in Iraq was “because he fell in love with George Bush”, and added that Blair’s wife, Cherie, was “obsessed with money”.

He described the Labour leadership race as a “f*cking mess”, and said Jeremy Corbyn was  “useless” and “a romantic idiot”, Andy Burnham was “terribly contradictory” and “goes whichever way the wind is blowing”, and Yvette Cooper was “ok but not strong”. He couldn’t remember Liz Kendall’s name, but said she was “a Blair supporter who is just too naïve”.

He had strong words for Alex Salmond too, who he said was “a silly pompous prat”.

The one politician he praised was Chancellor George Osborne, who he said was a “very, very consummate politician”, who would become Prime Minister.

  • To be honest he is probably saying what we all think about our Politicians!

Ok his dress is a bit fanciful for my tastes(!) but he is not doing anything illegal. He is a victim, the person who released the photographs is probably breaking the law as is the Sun for publishing then without Lord Sewel's permission.

Everyone has a right to privacy, and Sewels has been broken, hope the police make some arrests.

We should be demanding the arrest of the Sun's editor!

  • I'm disappointed at the prurience of this article and the way it seems to take the same line as our gutter press.

Is the headline meant to suggest that you disapprove of cross-dressing?
