Lammy leaps up leader board to second place in Labour mayoral race

Lammy slips ahead of Sadiq Khan, but Tessa Jowell still holds top spot

Tottenham MP David Lammy now holds second place in Labour’s mayoral race, if the latest polls are to be believed.

According to a poll of Labour supporters by YouGov, Lammy’s slow and steady rise has seen him inch past Tooting MP Sadiq Khan.

Meanwhile, Tessa Jowell is firmly in the lead.

YouGov research executive in political and social research, Nicola Wildash, said: “Among Londoners, David Lammy has overtaken his rival Sadiq Khan to become Labour’s second choice as mayor. Khan, who has his eyes set on the top spot, will no doubt be disappointed by our latest poll.

“However, both Lammy and Khan are neck and neck in this race; anything could happen in the next few months.”

According to the YouGov poll, the support for the various Labour candidates stands as follows:

Tessa Jowell 37%

David Lammy 22%

Sadiq Khan 21%

Dianne Abbott 13%

Gareth Thomas 4%

Christian Wolmar 2%

Neeraj Patil 1%

Keran Kerai 0%

YouGov’s sample size was 1,047 and the survey was carried out online over a two-day period.

On July 3, LabourList released the results of their own poll of Labour supporters, which looked very different, except for Tessa Jowell’s domination. (There are no figures for the sample size)

Their results are as follows:

Tessa Jowell 35%

Sadiq Khan 18%

Christian Wolmar 12%

Diane Abbott 12%

David Lammy 9%

Gareth Thomas 1%

With four weeks to go until ballot papers are sent out, it’s all to play for.
