It's Green Party time! Greens overtake Lib Dems as 2,000 members join in a day

The Green Party now has more members than the Lib Dems and UKIP after gaining more than 2,000 members in ONE DAY – temporarily crashing the website.

The party has seen an unprecedented rise in membership numbers over the last few months, with numbers more than doubling since September to 44,713 yesterday.

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett said the website crashed yesterday under the weight of the new registrations.

UKIP had been slightly ahead at 41,943 and the Lib Dems in front at 44,576, but yesterday the Greens soared past them both, coming into fourth place, behind Labour, the Tories and the SNP.

Part of the swell in support has been down to the party’s increased visibility after a row erupted over whether Bennett should be allowed to take part in the televised leaders’ debates.

However, thinks the broadcasters will have difficulty excluding Bennett now that the party is the fourth biggest in the UK – and still growing rapidly.

The Green Party hasn't overtaken the Lib Dems in members; there are three British Green Parties, with a combined membership higher than the Lib Dems. However to compare like with like you'd have subtract Greens who were members of more than one of the parties, and add the Alliance Party membership to the Lib Dem figure.
