“Epic patronising tosser”, why has Boris lashed out at Blair?

London mayor takes former PM to task

Never one to use a pithy description when an outlandish one will work better, Boris Johnson has described Tony Blair as an “epic patronising tosser” for saying that Britain should not hold a referendum on EU membership.

The comments follow Blair’s outspoken support for Ed Miliband’s stance on the EU. Labour opposes a referendum, while the Tories are promising one in 2017 if they are successful at the election next month.

According to the Sun, Johnson said: “How dare he tell the British people that they may not pronounce on this matter. That it must be reserved to a sacred cast of intellectuals and do-gooders to decide.

“Actually the British people are very wise, they will make up their minds, they will consider it very deeply, and I’m sure they will get the right answer. But I think we owe it to the British people to produce a better treaty, not just for Britain but for Europe.”

Johnson has previously supported Britain’s membership of the EU.
