Donald Trump threatens to axe £700m investment if UK bans him

Republican presidential hopeful could pull £700m in funding for golf ventures

US Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw £700m in investment if the British government bans him from entering the country.

Trump’s statement comes after parliament confirmed it is set to debate banning the billionaire businessman from Britain, after an official petition was signed by 571,000 people.

A statement released by the Trump Organisation said: “Any action to restrict travel would force the Trump Organisation to immediately end these and all future investments we are currently contemplating in the United Kingdom.”

If banned, Trump would pull £200m in investments from the Tunberry golf course in South Ayrshire, and £500m from the Trump International Golf Links, near Aberdeen.

Any petition that gains over 100,000 signatures must be considered for debate in parliament. It is highly unlikely the UK will ban Trump, though the Home Secretary does have the power to ban individuals from legally entering the country.

The debate has been tabled for 18 January.

  • This would be excessively stupid. You may not like his opinions, but nearly as many did as did n,t. What happened to free speech? He is a major public figure, even conceivably a future us president. We allow far more hate filled jihadists into uk.
