Brexit beckoning Boris? Mayor reportedly backing EU departure

Johnson at odds with Cameron over EU referendum

Mayor of London Boris Johnson is said to be considering backing a “no” vote at the referendum on whether Britain should remain in the EU.

Such a move would put Johnson at odds with Conservative Party leader David Cameron, who has said he will campaign for continued membership.

A report in the Sunday Times said that Boris wanted the British public to reject any renegotiations Cameron has won by the time of the referendum. This, he said, will give Britain more negotiating power in the long term.

“We need to be bold,” Johnson said. “You have to show them that you are serious.”

It was previously understood that Johnson would support a renegotiated membership.
