Boris bypasses government to spend £218,000 on German water cannon for London

London Mayor Boris Johnson has authorised the purchase of three water cannon from the German Federal Reserve, despite the use of the equipment not being approved by the government.

The water cannon, which have never before been used on the British mainland, will cost £218,000 and the deal was signed off by deputy mayor for policing and crime Stephen Greenhalgh.

The offer to purchase the cannon at a knock-down price only stood until July, according to the Evening Standard.

Greenhalgh said that the cost of purchasing the units new could have been as high as £2.3m.

He said: “We do not expect further such opportunities to purchase at such an advantageous cost.”

“It is open to the Home Secretary to make a decision about whether or not to authorise the use of water cannon on the UK mainland.”
