Start as you mean to go on: Commuters hit with back-to-work train delays and cancellations

Train problems blighted London on the first working day of the New Year

Are you beginning 2016 with the phase “new year, new you” firmly lodged in your mind?

You might be aiming to get a fresh start this year but it seems London’s train companies are back into their old ways.

Commuters this morning were treated to delays and cancellations to South West Trains, Southern Rail, Southeastern and Arriva services, as they tried to get to work on the first working day after the New Year.

Trains departing from and arriving at Waterloo were badly hit by the issues, said Network Rail.

In a statement, it said: “A problem at the depot near Guildford means that some trains to and from London Waterloo via Wimbledon are being cancelled, as the trains are unable to leave the depot to begin services.

“There is no firm estimate yet of how long disruption will last but it is likely to continue until at least 10am.”

The Gatwick Express is running only every 30 minutes, thanks to a signalling problem at Purley, and Thameslink services between Brighton and London Bridge are every hour.

Striking workers on the Arriva Trains Wales service mean those trains are also suspended.

Tickets for today will be accepted tomorrow and are being allowed by other operators today.

Commuters complained via Twitter, calling the service “terrible” and criticising a 1.1% fare rise which has come into effect for 2016.
