Newham council refunds £347,000 in illegal parking fines

Newham council in east London has to refund up to £347,000 to drivers after they were issued with parking fines incorrectly.

Between 2009 and 2013, the council issued 4,952 parking tickets, using cameras at 12 locations in the borough.

But the model of camera used had not been authorised for use. Only cameras which have been specifically approved by the Vehicle Certification Agency may be used for issuing fines.

Last June the council refused to refund affected motorists, but now it has agreed to pay up and has written to all car owners affected.

A council spokeswoman said: “Steps have been taken to ensure the certification is maintained in future.”
