Crush hour: Do you face one of the top 10 most overcrowded train services in London?

Do you suffer from overcrowded trains? Is your commute filled with the claustrophobic horror of feeling packed like sardines in a crushed tin box? Well, you are not alone (pun intended).

New government data has revealed England and Wales’s ten most overcrowded train services. And surprise surprise – all of them go through London.

This will be no revelation to regular commuters into and out of London, who endure the daily indignity of attempting to board carriages already stuffed to the gills with irate passengers unable to sit for lengthy journeys.  And with rail fares set to go up, it looks like the fun will continue.

But spare a thought for the passengers who regularly take the 16.46 service from London Euston to Crewe – the country’s most overcrowded service. According to the Department for Transport, this is a four-car train with a maximum capacity of 206. The journey takes 2 hours 38 minutes. Upon arrival the train can have as many as 416 souls scrabbling for air when it arrives.  That means the train is over capacity by an incredible 201%. It’s a crushing thought.

Here are the 10 most overcrowded peak train services. Claustrophobics look away now.
