Boris is “engineering” Tube strikes in August and "Londoners deserve better”

Harsh words about the mayor’s relationship with transport unions

Unions have accused Boris Johnson of “playing politics” with the Tube, as workers are set to strike on 5 August over the introduction of the Night Tube.

The 24-hour strike will be the second in a month, with unions and City Hall failing to come to an agreement over working hours for staff who work across the London Underground network, when the new late-night Tube comes in.

TSSA union boss Manuel Cortes said: “This dispute is being engineered by the mayor from City Hall. He has tied the hands of his negotiating team who are unable to make a new offer without his say so.

“By allowing next week’s strike to go ahead, he will have an ideal excuse for delaying the start of the Night Tube. He will also increase his standing with the Tory right ahead of their conference in October by claiming he is taking on the rail unions.

“Londoners deserve better than a mayor who is playing politics with a Tube service which should be safe for both the staff and the travelling public.”

In response, a City Hall spokesperson said: “The mayor believes that the offer that is on the table from London Underground is a very fair one and he urges meaningful dialogue on it to continue. He repeats his call for the unions to call off this unnecessary strike.”

He is right, the strike is unnecessary, they just have to refuse the night shift when it's due.

  • Nothing like a totally unbalanced view then. Why should he and the citizens of London give in to union black mail? I agree they have the right to strike, but we as citizens also have the right to say no to their greedy demands - as simple as that.

The other view is that the unions are to blame for engineering the strike - which is of course just as true.

So please less left wing journalism and more unbiased facts and let us judge.
