Queues and squeals of delight as London cash machine gives out £10,000 in free money

There’s nothing quite like the sensation of finding a tenner folded into a corner of a jacket you haven’t worn since last winter. Legitimate free money! That’s the dream.

So imagine the ecstasy of people in Tooting in South London on Wednesday, when a new cash machine on the high street started giving out hundreds of pounds at once to customers for free, and not by mistake either.

Here’s the hilarious (and jealousy-inducing) video:

The unsuspecting cash machine users completed their transactions as normal, but to their surprise, following the transaction, the machine then emitted further payments in crisp £50 notes.

It was of course, all an elaborate marketing ploy. The delighted reactions of users were all filmed by hidden cameras as a stunt by online gambling exchange Betfair.

The cash machine gave out about £10,000 in £50 denominations. Some users received as much as £500 in a single transaction, and as the news spread, a queue began to form.

According to the Daily Mail, Betfair set up the cash machine on Tooting high street to promote a new product called Price Rush.

Betfair brand product manager Andy Holmes said: “The odds on getting more money than you expected at a cash machine are pretty slim but yesterday our Super Rich Cash Machines Price Rushed transactions, gave some users much more money than they requested.”

“For anyone visiting the Super Rich Cash Machines Tooting branch today, they may be in for the same experience.”
