Pictures: Why were thousands of people protesting last night dressed as Guy Fawkes?

While many Brits were huddled round bonfires or watching spectacular firework displays, thousands of anti-capitalist protesters descended on London last night.

The protesters, many of whom wore Guy Fawkes masks, marched from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square as part of the Million Masks March.

On the way, the march passed Buckingham Palace and the BBC’s New Broadcasting House prompting a lock-down in the building.

The organised protest was generally peaceful, however 10 people were arrested – three of those on suspicion of assaulting police officers.

Comedian Russell Brand, who has recently become well-known for his anti-establishment views, also made an apprearance.

In the UK it coincided with Bonfire Night, however, demonstrations were also held in countries including Cambodia, Chile, Canada, the US and Mexico.
