Mayor of London Boris Johnson has apologised after being caught on camera giving his wife a “backie” on his bicycle.

The mayor, 51, was filmed cycling along at a pretty nippy pace, while his wife Marina Wheeler, who is the same age, sat behind him on the saddle. The video was published by The Sun.

The couple’s late-night cycling antics were filmed by three men who were passing in a car, and who pointed out that the mayor was breaking the law.

A spokesman for the mayor said: “The mayor wishes to apologise for offering his wife a short lived lift on the back of his bike.

“He wasn’t intending to ride all the way home from north Kensington to north London with Marina on the back, rather he was attempting to transport his wife to a main road, from where they hailed a black cab for her.

“As everyone knows, the mayor is a huge supporter of cycling, and an even bigger fan of the black cab trade, hence his desire to combine the two.”

Cycling with an additional passenger on a bicycle designed for one person is an offence under Section 24 of the Road and Traffic Act (1998), for which a £200 fine may apply.

  • Sort of proves the motorists point that the really problem in London in the large number of cyclist who refuse to obey the law and put themselves and others at risk.

Perhaps its time for the police to make an example - we have the evidence!
